Yes, they work as a team, but they rarely talk about it. With The Octonauts, though, they just go about their business and teach by doing (show, don’t tell - that’s the creative writing principle). With the help of your friends.” These guiding principles are very transparent in the way that the characters work out problems and learn new things, etc. And if you believe in yourself, you can do anything. If you could sneak a peek at the guiding principles for most shows, I think it would be something like, “Everyone needs to be kind and learn how to share and above all else work together as a team. I would say that 99% of kids shows are very self-conscience about what they are doing and who their target audience is. Is it a good thing that our kids are growing up with this fantastically unrealistic understanding of the oceans? Frankly, I don’t care. More often than not, the image is hideous and potentially nightmare-inducing, which is why they are so wise to shield the children. They show clips from the episode during the song until the very, very end, when they show footage of the actual beast. They always close out with a “creature report,” which is a song about the featured animal from that episode. It’s fascinating, it’s entertaining, and I only have to see the real deal for about two seconds, right at the end. I can learn all about how slime eels got their name (yes, it involves slime) and how the oar fish is the longest fish in the ocean, without ever being grossed out. On The Octonauts, however, everything is cute, bright, and clean. All that water, all those crazy creatures with weird eyes and tentacles and a tendency to sting. I love seafood, but I am seriously squeamish about the ocean itself. The ocean is more palatable (no pun intended). The mudfish, for example, are loud, brawling, New York types, while the Beluga whales are Canadian worry worts. (Yes, polar bears, cats, and penguins saving the ocean one mission at a time - authentic.) It’s also hilarious to see the characters they come up with. ![]() The show originated in the UK, so that explains a lot, but I think it’s genius because the different accents make the ocean setting feel international - more authentic. British, Cockney, Australian, Scottish, southern American (as in Alabama, not Peru), plus lots more that I’m not accurately identifying. Some kids’ shows are obnoxious, but The Octonauts are awesome, and I’ll tell you why. ![]() “Restore, rescue, protect” is their motto. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the show, here’s the basic premise: the Octonauts are 8 animals who go around in the ocean in an octopus-shaped submarine and help all the sea creatures. And, since it’s Netflix, unless you deliberately stop the show, one episode just keeps rolling to the next. We’ve got it on Netflix, which means three commercial-free seasons are available at all times. ![]() Bopper’s current favorite show is The Octonauts.
